Honest comparison

BuilderDash vs Tradify

Tradify is genuinely good software. It is one of the most highly-rated job-management apps for trades, and if your business runs on a steady flow of shorter jobs - quote, do the work, invoice - it is hard to fault. The difference is the shape of the work. Tradify is built around the individual job. BuilderDash is built around the project - multi-week, multi-stage, several live at once. If that is how you work, the two tools feel different in daily use. Here is a fair look at both.

The core difference

One is built around jobs. The other around projects.

Tradify describes itself as software that runs “every job from start to finish”, and that is exactly what it does well: a clean, linear path from enquiry to quote to job to invoice, purpose-built for electricians, plumbers, gas and HVAC engineers and property-maintenance firms. For a business doing lots of discrete jobs, that simplicity is the whole point.

BuilderDash starts from a different unit of work. A project-based contractor is not running one job at a time - they are running a handful of live jobs that each stretch over weeks, move through stages, accrue variations and carry their own costs, files, photos and crew. BuilderDash is organised around that: the project is the hub, and everything hangs off it. Tradify’s own project-management feature is framed as day-to-day single-job admin rather than staged, multi-week delivery - which is the honest line between the two.

What it does
BuilderDash
Job management for project-based trades - enquiry, quote, project, tasks & scheduling, site files, time, invoicing, all against the project.
Tradify
Job management for trades - quote, schedule, track and invoice individual jobs, with a strong mobile app.
Built for
BuilderDash
Project-based contractors: builders, fit-out, refurbishment, shopfitters, multi-trade and M&E running multi-stage jobs.
Tradify
Service and install trades - electricians, plumbers, gas, HVAC, property maintenance - often 1–20 people.
Pricing model
BuilderDash
Split by role: Admin £39/user/mo, Field £15/user/mo - a field crew that only logs time and tasks costs less.
Tradify
Per user across all tiers: Lite £34, Pro £37, Plus £44 per user/mo (UK); a Custom tier is quote-only.
UK compliance
BuilderDash
UK-built. VAT and CIS handled in the job-to-invoice flow; syncs to Xero.
Tradify
Creates CIS-compatible invoices and supports VAT reverse charge, with deductions handled via its Sage/Xero sync.
Platform
BuilderDash
Web-based (Mac-friendly) with a mobile app for field users.
Tradify
Cloud web app plus iOS and Android apps; works across Mac and PC.

BuilderDash prices exclude VAT, which is added to your final bill. Competitor details are accurate at the time of writing and may change.

Notably, the two are closer than most comparisons pretend on the basics: both are cloud, both run on a Mac, both are UK-tax-aware, both sync to Xero. Tradify is New Zealand-built (now owned by the UK’s Access Group); BuilderDash is UK-built. The decision really comes down to how your work is shaped, and how your team is priced.

Who each suits

Which is the better fit?

Tradify is the better fit if…

  • You run a high volume of shorter jobs - service calls, installs, maintenance visits - where the job, not the project, is the natural unit.
  • You are a sole trader or a small team and want something proven, simple and quick to pick up, with a very well-rated mobile app.
  • Your priority is speed from quote to invoice, and you do not need to track a job across weeks of stages.
  • You value a long track record and large user base over UK-specific, project-first design.

BuilderDash is the better fit if…

  • Your jobs run for weeks or months and move through stages - you need costs, tasks, files and crew tracked against each project.
  • You have several live projects at once and want to see margin on each before it is finished.
  • You have a field crew who only log time, complete tasks and add photos - the £15 Field seat keeps their cost down.
  • You want software designed UK-first around project-based construction, not adapted from a single-job service model.
The honest take

Neither is wrong - they are built for different work

If someone doing reactive and install work asked us whether to use Tradify, we would not talk them out of it. It is a mature, well-liked product that does its job well, and its per-user pricing is easy to reason about for a small team. Where it stops fitting is the moment the job becomes a project: several weeks long, several stages deep, several running at once, with a crew on site and a margin you need to protect as you go.

That is the work BuilderDash is built for. The project is the record everything attaches to, the Admin/Field pricing reflects that office and site staff need different things, and the whole system is designed for project-based UK trades rather than adapted from a single-job service model. If that is your world, it will feel like the right shape.

Common questions

Is BuilderDash or Tradify better for a sole trader?
For a sole trader or a small team doing a high volume of shorter jobs, Tradify is a strong, well-rated choice and its per-user pricing is simple. BuilderDash earns its keep once your work is project-based - multi-week jobs with stages, and a field crew whose lower-cost Field seats bring the per-head cost down.
Does Tradify handle CIS and VAT?
Yes. Tradify creates CIS-compatible invoices and supports the VAT domestic reverse charge, with the underlying deductions handled through its Sage or Xero sync. BuilderDash handles UK VAT and CIS as part of the job-to-invoice flow and also syncs to Xero, so both are UK-tax-aware - this is not the main difference between them.
What is the real difference between BuilderDash and Tradify?
Workflow. Tradify is organised around individual jobs on a linear enquiry-to-invoice path, which suits service and install work. BuilderDash is organised around projects - several live multi-stage jobs at once, with costs, tasks, files and crew tracked against each one.
