Files & photos

Files & photos keeps all the paperwork and site pictures for a job in one place - drawings, quotes, certificates, contracts and photos of the work. Everything sits against the job itself, so your team can find it without digging through emails or messages.

Every file or photo you add in BuilderDash is attached to a specific job, so there's no hunting through inboxes or chat threads to find the right drawing or certificate. You can also choose which files are safe to share with your client, keeping everything else internal by default.

How to add and manage files

  1. Open the job you want to add files to, then go to its Files tab.
  2. Drag your files or photos onto the upload area, or click it to browse and pick files from your computer. You can select several at once.
  3. Wait for the upload to finish. Photos appear in a Photos grid and other documents appear in a Documents list underneath.
  4. Click a photo to open it full size, or click a document's name to open or preview it.
  5. Click the download icon next to a document to save a copy to your device.
  6. Click the eye icon on a file to make it visible to the client. A highlighted eye means the client can see it; click it again to hide the file.
  7. Click the bin icon and confirm to remove a file. Deleting is limited to office and owner accounts.

Good to know

  • Files always live inside a job - there's currently no separate, workspace-wide files area, so you always work with files from inside the relevant job.
  • Photos (such as JPEG and PNG) show as a thumbnail gallery, while everything else - PDFs, Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents, plain text and CSV files, ZIP archives and CAD drawings - shows as a documents list with its size and upload date.
  • Files are hidden from your client by default. You switch sharing on per file with the eye icon, so you stay in control of what a client sees.
  • Some file types are blocked for safety, such as web pages and other files that could run code.
  • Each file can be up to 25 MB. If you select a mix of files and some are too big, only the ones within the limit are uploaded.
  • Deleting a file is permanent and frees up the storage it was using. Deleting still works even if your workspace's storage is full.
  • Everything you upload counts towards your workspace's storage allowance, and deleting a file frees that allowance back up. If an upload would take you slightly over your limit, a small grace buffer lets it through with a gentle reminder to upgrade soon; beyond that buffer, new uploads are blocked until you upgrade your plan or free up space.

Common questions

Can my client see the files I upload?
Not by default. Files are hidden from the client until you click the eye icon on that file to make it visible - you control this individually for each file.
Is there a file size limit?
Yes, each file can be up to 25 MB. If you upload several files at once and some are too big, only the ones within the limit go through.
What happens if I delete a file by mistake?
Deleting is permanent, so there's no way to recover a deleted file. Take care before confirming - only office and owner accounts can delete files.
